In Memory of
Silver Springs Resort
On Kabekona Bay
Walker, Minnesota
By Bill Van Dyck
This site is dedicated to the memory of Silver Springs Resort and the wonderful times spent there. I was born in 1949 and began visiting Silver Springs in the early 1950s. My grandparents began spending summers on Leech Lake in 1920, and after staying at several resorts, settled into cabin #9 at Silver Springs in about 1953. In 1956 they purchased the end two cabins (#11 and #12) from the resort where they spent their summers until selling them in 1968.
Today Silver Springs is only a memory, after suffering the same fate as too many other resorts on Kabekona Bay and Leech Lake. The resort was purchased for private development after a number of years in financial difficulty. After the sale (around 1990) the new owner tore-down most of the cabins and subdivided the property into individual home sites. As of July, 2007 there are only two original Silver Springs structures and one additional structure that may still have the original framing but has been otherwise completely renovated.
On this site are a number of old photos showing the resort, its guests, and their catch from the 1940s and 1950s. The photos from that time period were acquired in 1972 when the resort manager gave me one of the many framed photo montages which hung in the cabins. The more recent photos were taken from 1987 to present.
